Gwyneth’s juvenile blue belt promotion, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Otomi Martial Arts, and Parker, Colorado

October 1, 2026

This past Monday was a very special night for our Otomi Martial Arts family as we had the privilege of promoting Gwyneth Hayes to the rank of Juvenile Blue Belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Promotions are always meaningful, but some have a way of making you stop and think about the entire journey that brought a student to that moment. For me, Gwyn’s promotion was definitely one of those moments.

I have had the opportunity to watch Gwyn grow on our mats, and one of the things that makes me most proud of her is that her journey hasn’t always been one where she absolutely loved coming to jiu-jitsu. Like a lot of kids, there were times when training probably wasn’t at the top of her list of things she wanted to do. But somewhere along the way, something changed. The little girl who wasn’t always excited about training began developing into a young woman who understood the value of showing up, putting in the work, and getting better.

That transformation is one of the things I love most about martial arts. We often look at a new belt and see the accomplishment, but we don’t always see all of the ordinary days that created it. We don’t see every class when someone was tired, every difficult round, every technique that didn’t work the first ten times, or every day when staying home would have been easier. Gwyn’s blue belt represents all of those days just as much as it represents the night we tied it around her waist.

What makes her accomplishment even more impressive to me is the young lady she is becoming away from the mats. Gwyn is balancing school, holding down a job, training jiu-jitsu, and all of the other responsibilities that come with growing up. She is incredibly smart and capable, and watching her learn to manage those responsibilities while continuing to make time for her training says a lot about her maturity. Those lessons in discipline, time management, perseverance, and commitment will serve her long after any tournament, class, or belt promotion is over.

As her coach, I am extremely proud of how far Gwyn has come, but I am probably even more excited about where she can go from here. A blue belt is certainly something worth celebrating, especially when moving from the youth ranks into the juvenile ranks, but it is also the beginning of an entirely new chapter. There is so much more for her to learn, so many opportunities for her to grow, and so much potential still waiting to be developed.

Gwyn, congratulations on earning your Juvenile Blue Belt. You earned this one through years of growth, consistency, hard work, and perseverance. Keep that same focus in jiu-jitsu, keep it in school, keep it at work, and most importantly, carry it with you into life. We are incredibly proud of the young woman you are becoming, and everyone at Otomi Martial Arts is excited to see where your journey takes you next.

Congratulations, Gwyneth. Your Otomi family is very proud of you. Now the real fun begins.
