We’re thrilled to share some exciting news from the competition mats—congratulations to Larry Choi on earning gold in the Purple Belt, Light Featherweight, Master 3 Gi Division at the IBJJF Denver International Open on May 10th!
The IBJJF Open events are known for attracting elite athletes from across the country, making the level of competition incredibly high. Larry rose to the occasion, representing Otomi Martial Arts and the Caio Terra Association with skill, composure, and heart.
Leading up to the event, Larry approached this tournament with a calm mindset, a sign of the confidence that comes from hours of consistent and focused training. Rather than feeling overwhelmed, he embraced the opportunity to showcase the work he had put in.
In his match, Larry executed his gameplan with precision—pulling guard early, working for the sweep, and transitioning into dominant top positions. After an initial exchange that saw him momentarily lose position, Larry remained composed, using intelligent frames and timing to regain control. A scramble led to a pseudo mount and then full mount, where he applied steady top pressure and eventually transitioned to his opponent’s back. While a submission finish eluded him, Larry’s dominant performance secured a 13–3 victory on points.
This gold medal is not just a symbol of victory—it’s a reflection of Larry’s dedication, discipline, and the countless hours spent honing his craft. His success also highlights the strength of the team around him. As Larry shared, “None of this would have been possible without the unwavering support from the team and coaches at Otomi and Caio Terra Association.”
We are incredibly proud of Larry and grateful to have him as part of our family. Please join us in celebrating his achievement!
