Yesterday morning during our Saturday morning Family Class, I asked our students a simple question:
“What is the difference between perception and reality?”
The answers were fun, thoughtful, and a great reminder that we all see the world through our own experiences. The challenge is that sometimes what we perceive isn’t actually what’s happening. A comment can sound rude when it wasn’t intended that way. A correction can feel personal when it was meant to help. If we’re not careful, we can react to our assumptions instead of the facts.
One of the most valuable skills we can develop—both in martial arts and in life—is learning to pause and ask questions before we react. “Did you mean it that way?” is a simple question that can prevent misunderstandings, strengthen relationships, and help us make better decisions. As our students continue their training this week, I encourage them to remember that strong martial artists don’t just control their bodies—they learn to control their perceptions as well.
